Berry Bros & Rudd

The latest collection of wines selected from Berry Bros' extensive range to be shown to various media included some particularly fine Austrians (thanks to BBR's acquisition of importers Richards Walford), some truly delicious and underpriced Beaujolais selected by Jasper Morris MW and some interesting Spaniards, even if Berry's Spanish collection is arguably from more mainstream producers than their Italian collection (see Walter's verdict on Berry's Italian adventures) as well as the new single-vineyard bottlings from Royal Tokaji, which are not cheap but are certainly very distinctive and special.

Royal Tokaji, Szt Tamás Aszú 6 Puttonyos 2007 Tokaj 18 Drink 2012-2025
Hugely intense and broad and carelessly talented sort of thing. So obviously top quality. Just brilliant. Layered and both structured and opulent.
£65 per 50cl Berry Bros & Rudd

Royal Tokaji, Mézes Mály Aszú 6 Puttonyos 2007 Tokaj 18 Drink 2013-2025
Mango flavours and very sweet and sour and very Hungarian somehow. Juicy with notes of juicy green apple too. Open and fun though I don't quite see why it is so much more expensive than the rest. Very zesty and fresh.
£85 per 50cl Berry Bros & Rudd

Royal Tokaji, Betsek Aszú 6 Puttonyos 2007 Tokaj 17+ Drink 2015-2025
First growth. Hugely intense and smoky. Really rather bonfire-like on the nose. And then vastly dense and rich. Super sweet and broad and only on the very end does it tighten up. Many layers. Apricot fool.
£65 per 50cl Berry Bros & Rudd

Royal Tokaji, Birsalmás Aszú 6 Puttonyos 2007 Tokaj 17 Drink 2012-2019
Second growth. Very ripe pears on the nose and even a bit of grainy pear texture on the palate.
£50 per 50cl Berry Bros & Rudd

Royal Tokaji, Nyulázso Aszú 6 Puttonyos 2007 Tokaj 17 Drink 2016-2027
First growth. Racy and firm with marked acidity and structure. Not quite as opulent as Betsek.
£65 per 50cl Berry Bros & Rudd
