Some wines are so expensive that you only buy a bottle for a really special occasion. Others are so rare that you may only be able to buy them by the glass. But Royal Tokaji Essencia 2003 is so expensive and so rare that it is only being sold by the spoonful - though it's a crystal spoon, obviously...

Restaurants in the US have been selling this luscious Hungarian wine by the spoon for a while, but D&D's Plateau in Canary Wharf has become the first UK eatery to offer its customers a taste of what wine writer Hugh Johnson poetically describes as 'Medieval Viagra'. What makes it so special?

Essencia is made from free-run juice from intensely sweet, shrivelled Aszu grapes. It takes 20-30kg of grapes to produce one 37.5cl bottle; that's equivalent to one person picking grapes for three days. The result is a pure sugar hit, which was thought to have medicinal properties in the Middle Ages. This magical drop costs £13.50 a spoonful at Plateau - and you get a dessert of spiced gingerbread and poached pearthrown in gratis.

D&D has also joined forces with importer Waddesdon Wine to offer diners rare bottles from the Baron Philippe de Rothschild portfolio of wineries, which includes Chateau Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux and Opus One in California's Napa Valley. Keep an eye on for details of special dinners and tastings throughout the year.
