Royal Tokaji wines at Ascot Late Harvest 2014<br />

Hugh Johnson, co-founder of Royal Tokaji, was recently asked to devise a "wine dinner" at The Knickerbocker Club in New York. He wrote about this experience in his "coups de coeur" pages in the latest copy of The World of Fine Wine, issue 55.

"We concluded the meal with two contrasting cheeses a stinging Roquefort beside a luscious triple cream. The chef added some cherry jam and walnuts. Only one wine in my experience complimented these contrasting tastes and textures the 5 puttonyos Tokaji Aszú that Peter Vinding-Diers first blended in 1990 and 18 years later, in the 2008 vintage version, essentially the same wine. Perhaps I was labouring the point when I served its 6 putts first growth sibling Mézes Mály with a baked Fuji apple. Nobody suspected they were sipping a wine that is 20% sugar, a perfect apple matches sugar with acidity".
