20th Anniversary

Royal Tokaji
Royal Tokaji has been celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2010 by opening a new state of the art winery in Mád. Ben Howkins, one of the founding directors, of Royal Tokaji, invited export partners from around the world to a gala dinner in the new winery.

The new winery was designed by the leading Hungarian architect Csaba Bodonyi and now has facilities for over 1,000 maturing barrels of 3HL & 5HL size made from oak trees grown in the nearby Zemplén mountains and stainless steel tank capacity of 2,700 HL. It is already acclaimed as the most important in the Tokaji region.

Károly Áts, Royal Tokaji’s award winning wine maker says, 'I have waited 15 years for this moment. This investment is very important for the future of our wine region and Royal Tokaji'.

During the day, Hugh Johnson, the world’s best known wine writer and co-founder of Royal Tokaji, had welcomed HE the British Ambassador to Budapest, Greg Dorey, to a picnic lunch near the Theresia Chapel in Tarcal, overlooking the historic Mézes Mály vineyard, of which the company has the major share. In brilliant sunshine the party ate the traditional goulash and drank dry Furmint wine from the vines below.

Royal Tokaji
a lifelong ambition
'This fulfils a lifelong ambition of mine. Forty years ago, when I first visited Tokaji, I could not have imagined making some of its finest wines myself. What has happened since the (1989) Revolution has been a dream coming - slowly - true'.

Overlooking the 18th century great first growth Mézes Mály, Hugh Johnson commented, 'This fulfils a lifelong ambition of mine. Royal Tokaji was the first foreign company established in the Tokaji wine region in 1990. Following this leap of faith, others followed and the renaissance of Tokaji began.

The company now exports to over 30 countries and is internationally recognised as the brand leader of quality aszu wines. The gala dinner was the climax of a series of events held at the new winery this year.

He read a letter of congratulations from his co-founder Peter Vinding Diers and a message from Miguel Torres, the company's Spanish distributor, and finally thanked Damon de Laszlo for his continued support.
